People on Lismore were very self reliant, producing most of their food and making many of the necessities for life at home. This attractive vernacular chair, from materials at hand, was made by John Livingston (1865-1949), son of John Livingston and Mary Carmichael in Balimakillichan. After time off the island he farmed at Frackersaig, where he was well known as a cattle breeder. This much-loved chair was donated by John Livingstone, Balure, his great nephew.
The museum collection includes another vernacular wooden object, probably made on the island, recovered from Hawthorn House. The candle lantern LISDD:2010.159 236 mm x 146 mm x 169 mm has four glass panels, one removable to replace the candle.
