Medieval Weekend: Two Walks

Achinduin Castle walk led by Dr David Caldwell

Despite the glowering skies and later the persistent rain, many set off to look explore the medieval Achinduin Castle (sometimes known as the Bishop’s Palace), at the south end of the island. Dr David Caldwell led the walk following his talk the previous day about the archaeological excavations done there in the 1970s. Details of earlier finds here

There was much speculation about the possible reason for a MacDougall castle on this spot and why there are two medieval castles on the island. Much speculation but few solid answers. Where was the water supply? How did the residents come and go (could they enter the north gate mounted on a horse?). Or even did they come and go? Perhaps it was a MacDougall vanity project as it was indeed an impressive site.

Whatever the answers to these and many more questions, the castle has a wonderful setting and is impressive as is the other MacDougall castle at Coeffin which the group visited in the afternoon.
