Our initial collection of two hundred books was given to Comann Eachdraidh Lios Mòr in 1997 by David White, Frackersaig. It was a most kind and generous gift and a far seeing one too. The Schoolhouse was our centre then and proved to be a suitable beginning for the burgeoning society. In 2007 we moved to our present beautiful building at Port a Charron with a room specially designed to house the collection, now known, in honour of David, as ‘The David White Library’.
Thanks to many donations of books by friends, David’s gift has now grown to six hundred books, four hundred in English and two hundred in Gaelic, most chosen for their relevance to Argyll and the Highlands and Islands, some for their Scottish content. We have a good cross section of genres which will appeal to visiting researchers. These range from folklore and story telling, 18th/19th century travellers to Scotland, Gaelic place names, archaeology, history, crofting, the clans, the Clearances, the history of the Church and statistical accounts to Gaelic music and songs, poetry and prose.
Books may be read and used for research in the library but may not be taken out. We would really welcome more research students to this most excellent Library and very peaceful place.
