The unveiling of the replica Book of Kells took place at the opening of the library at Ionad Naomh Moluag and was a day truly worth celebrating. It recognises Lismore’s place in the ecclesiastical history of Argyll, for, while St Columba is much celebrated, St Moluag is almost unknown despite his having made Lismore a great early centre of Christianity. and spread the word much further.
When Museum Development Officer Catherine Gillies unveiled the replica, she told members of the Comann Eachdraidh that Elaine Robertson had been very influential in getting the book here simply by mentioning to the Argyll and Bute officers that Lismore deserved to be celebrated along with Iona. The Officers were very receptive and so the book has taken its place in the new library where it can be seen until 2 September 2007.
The opening of Lismore’s new reference library was a milestone in the recording and gathering of the island’s history. Barbara MacDougall has worked hard collecting Gaelic and English books with help from members of Comann Eachdraidh Lios Mor in particular David White. There are books too from the old UF manse donated by the Odling family.
The lending library will, as before, come from Argyll and Bute Library services, and it includes a children’s section.
