Book Week started on the Monday 5 September 2016 with a week-long and very popular second hand book sale in the library.
Children’s Book Day 5 September 2016
The first day of Book Week was for the schoolchildren who spent all day in the Museum. In the morning they learnt how to write and illustrate a story with Jennifer Baker and Sarah Campbell who were on hand to launch their brand new children’s book “The Tartan Trampoline” which Jennifer, the writer, read to an enthralled audience. After wards they set about writing and illustrating their own stories with great enthusiasm..
In the afternoon Catriona Lexy Campbell, an actor, poet and performer, worked with them creating a group story asking the children for suggestions about the plot character action etc. They loved it.
Alan Riach
On Tuesday 6 September at 2.30 pm Alan Riach, poet and Professor of Scottish Literature at Glasgow University, introduced us to the “The Birlinn of Clanranald” his acclaimed translation from the Gaelic of an epic song of homage to ocean, ships and sailors. He talked about it and read from it to a most appreciative audience.
James Robertson
On Wednesday 7th September James Robertson, the Booker long listed author of “And the Land Lay Still” and “The Testament of Gideon Mack”,. introduced “To Be Continued”, his latest book, a madcap Highland adventure about many things among them a man turning 50 and having a mid life crisis. And being laughed at. His humour was again heard in his now famous “The News Where You are” one of his notable short stories in the collection 365 which are all 365 words long exactly and written in one year.
The Wednesday evening session was Alan Riach and James Robertson in conversation.

On Thursday 8 September 2016 a delicious meal was shopped for, prepared, cooked and served in the cafe by volunteers of the Heritage Centre. It was amazing. We chose from on: Maw Broon’s Cottage Pie, Fine Scottish minced beef with Creamy Mash Topping, Paw Broon’s Flat Cap Fish Pie, Scottish Smoked Haddock and Prawns in a leek and white sauce with creamy mash topping, Horaces’ Vegetarian Shepherds Pie and Savoury brown lentil and vegetables with creamy mash topping. And that was served with Lismore steamed Cabbage, honey roast carrot and parsnip minted peas.
To follow Tipsy Laird, Chocolate and Orange Mousse, or Mixed Fruit Crumble and Custard.
A huge thank you to what was a quite large team from the grateful recipients.
By coincidence it was also Richard Fowler’s ( Point Cottage) birthday and a cake appeared.
