On the 6 November 2012 two Learning and Events officers from Dunollie Museum and Cultural centre – Archaeologist Tara Coia and Historian and Gaelic scholar Aonghas Murray – spent the day at Lismore Primary giving the children a taste of archaeology. It was part of a two session programme organised by Lorraine King and Jennifer Baker from Lismore Heritage Centre in which the children are learning about the significance of the island’s archaeological past.
Tara and Aonghas brought with them 3 boxes of prepared soil so the children could not only experience a simulated dig but also learn how to wash, label, draw and record artefacts.
The plan was to get some time outside at Killandrist with tape measures and pegs finding out how a real dig is organised but the weather was not good and there was a great deal to do in the time available. The children’s fascination with the experience was obvious from the outset and their concentration on the tasks impressive.
In the follow up session in the Museum itself, they explored the items in the collection that have been discovered on Lismore, learnt about their significance and how to be on the look out for their own discoveries.
