Islanders turned out in force to support local singer songwriter Shona Wright and there was almost standing room only. Shona began with an old favourite – The Wrong Side of the Moon -describing how it feels when the day starts with burnt toast and goes downhill from there.
When she started explaining the lyrics of Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now with its clouds just blocking the sun being friends letting you down, someone asked why all her songs seemed to be miserable. This made Shona smile and the audience ,it is true ,agreed that the most memorable songs do seem to be miserable. But we can only cope with so much of The Sun has Got Its hat on.
There were a few more cheery songs and some audience participation but the highlight of
the evening was Shona’s exquisite duet with the island’s Sarah Campbell of the
James Taylor’s melancholy but moving Fire and Rain when he blend of vocal
harmonies with Shona’s gentle guitar playing was mesmerizing
