On 18th February, islanders had a chance to try out a Gaelic learning class using the Ulpan method before deciding whether to sign up for a ten week course beginning on 16 April. 2012. The taster session was organised by Lorraine King and introduced by Adhamh O Broin from Ùlpan (a unique language teaching method originated in the middle east) assisted by Ann MacLean. Ann is a native speaker as well as mòd medal winning singer who also happens to be an Ùlpan teacher and has recently moved to the island.

She will teach two units/classes a week as this is the recommendation from Ùlpan to help people achieve fluency. The method is based on listening / repetition building up basic vocabulary which is immediately accessible. An astonishing 24 people turned up for the taster session some of whom were native speakers, and of those over 14 expressed interest in enrolling for the classes which Adhamb O Broin said was the most he had ever seen anywhere, let alone on such a small island. Enrolment for the classes is going on now and to get more info phone Lorraine at the museum. At the moment it looks as though there will be two groups as the numbers are so high so there should be room for late entries.
