On Monday 7 July 2014, Dr Pavel Iosad and Dr Michael Ramsammy from the Department of Linguistics and English Language at the University of Edinburgh, visited Lismore to carry out research as part of a study of aspects of Gaelic Phonetics.

Lismore Gaelic was studied, approximately, 50 years ago in a similar way. This time the concentration was on a selection of words and the way they are pronounced in contrast to other Gaelic speaking Islands
.

Islanders were visited and recorded in their homes and in the Island’s Heritage Centre. Archie MacColl (Pictured above with Dr Pavel Iosad and Dr Michael Ramsammy) , Margaret MacDonald, Cathy Carmichael and Duncan MacGregor all contributed to the research and we hope the researchers will return later in the year to share some of the results of their work.
